MACD, RSI & moving averages,
in plain English.
Below every OKX chart is a row of indicators most beginners ignore. You only need five — each with one idea and one trap.
Adding indicators on OKX
- Open the candlestick chart (landscape or desktop is easier).
- Tap “Indicators”.
- Main-chart overlays: MA, EMA, BOLL.
- Sub-chart panels: VOL, MACD, RSI, KDJ.
- Keep default parameters to start.
One overlay and two panels is plenty. Test everything in demo mode first.

Moving averages: the trend
- Price above a rising MA: uptrend bias; the reverse is a downtrend bias.
- Short MA crossing above long MA: “golden cross”; below is a “death cross”.
- EMA vs MA: EMA weights recent prices more — faster, but more false signals.
Moving averages always lag.
MACD: momentum and turns
- Bullish crossover: MACD line crosses above the signal line.
- Bearish crossover: crosses below.
- Zero line: crossovers above zero carry more weight.
- Histogram: growing bars = strengthening momentum.
In sideways markets MACD flips constantly; trading every cross just pays fees.
RSI: overbought and oversold
- Above 70: overbought — may pull back.
- Below 30: oversold — may bounce.
- Divergence: price makes a new high but RSI doesn’t — momentum fading.
The trap: in strong trends RSI can stay above 70 for weeks. Shorting every “overbought” reading gets you squeezed.
Bollinger Bands and KDJ
- Squeeze: narrowing bands often precede a big move.
- Expansion: a move is underway; watch which band price breaks.
- Riding the upper band is strength, not an automatic sell.
KDJ is a faster, noisier cousin of RSI — know it, don’t rely on it.
Why indicators fail — three rules
- They’re calculated from past prices; they describe, they don’t predict.
- Confirm with more than one: trend + momentum + volume.
- Signals don’t size positions — stops do. See risk management.
Indicators
FAQ.
01Does a MACD bullish crossover mean price will rise?
No. It signals improving momentum and gives many false signals in ranges. Confirm with trend and volume and use a stop.
02Should I sell when RSI is above 70?
Not automatically. Strong trends can stay overbought for a long time.
03Which indicator should beginners learn first?
Moving averages and volume, then MACD and RSI — one at a time, tested in demo mode.
04How do I add MACD on OKX?
Open the chart, tap Indicators, and choose MACD in the sub-chart section.
